Storm of the Month
Even though considerable wind damage occurred from microburst winds
in the Natchez area during the morning of February 26th, our radar
selection for Storm of the Month was observed later that afternoon.
The FEBRUARY WINNER developed near the Louisiana state line south of
Tylertown and intensified over Marion County before 300pm at about
78 miles from the KJAN radar site to the north. VILs peaked at 48 kg/m*m
while the 50dBz tilted core reached to just under 35,000 ft and exhibited
a strong Weak Echo Region(updraft into the storm). The Hail and Severe Hail
algorithms performed well as seen in the Cell Attribute Table image below and
a radar operator-defined Mesocyclone was observed in the weak to moderate
category. A stronger radar-defined Mesocyclone developed within 30 minutes
as the storm crossed northern Lamar county into southern Jones county where
subsequent tornadic wind damage was reported.
