DECEMBER was rather quiet this year in the convective department as winter weather took center stage. A moderate ice storm struck north and west portions of the state from the 21st through 23rd with a few reports of thunder freezing rain in the Delta region. Radar data was not that impressive for the month and only the precipitation total image below helped to outline the extent of the icing which remained generally northwest of a Macon to Carthage to Brandon to Natchez line. The worst icing occurred from Tupelo to the lower Delta area where up to 1.5 inches of ice coating was reported. At the peak of the storm there were some 167,000 residents without power.
