The few August thunderstorm candidates were unavailable due to technical difficulties and therefore we thought it would be worthwhile to view a year-to-year Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly comparison courtesy of the Navy. As you may or may not be aware, the second half of the hurricane season became quite active this year due to the development of La Nina. The images below compare the late September Anomalies of 1997 and 1998. It is quite obvious that the warm El Nino of 1997 has been clearly replaced by the cool La Nina extending along the equator from the west coast of South America. Should this pattern persist for the next year, many forecasters believe that the hurricane season of 1999 will be one to remember.
