Our August WINNER was the overall circulation detected with the remains of Hurricane Erin as it moved northwestward into east Mississippi. This image was taken on the evening of the 3rd as the eye crossed the Alabama border and the storm gradually weakened to a depression. An interesting highlight of the picture below was the blue colored "sunset spike"(not a tractor beam!) that can be viewed on a daily basis with the WSR-88D. You also can easily see the spiral banding structure of the system. Otherwise, individual strong thunderstorms were few and far between during this month so the focus was on using the Radar for tracking tropical systems.
