July 1906-February 1908. Instruments located at the M.R.R. Jones residence, 136 Adams Street. Observations were made by
Mr.Jones and
his wife during this time.
March 1908 - November 1929. Instruments located over sod near southwest corner of Post Office Building which stood where
the Federal
Building is now (1949) located. Many people remember seeing the instruments at the Post Office.
December 1929 - June 1931. Instruments located over sod in yard of the Zeagler residence at southwest corner of South
State Street
and Silas Brown (where Stuart C. Irby parking lot is now located)...
Mr. Smith's narrative corresponds well with the development of the National Weather Service across the country. From 1870 to
1891,
the government weather agency(named "Division of Telegrams and Reports for the Benefit of Commerce") was under the Signal
Service.
Most forecasts actually originated in Washington, D.C. with observations provided by field offices.
