Brandon Radar Installation Update
The dome for the new Brandon Radar was scheduled to be lifted atop the tower on December 20th. Mother nature didn't want to cooperate as winds picked up during the day. In order for the dome to be lifted winds would have to subside to less than 15 miles an hour. Finally late in the afternoon on Friday December 20th the winds slacked off and the dome was lifted and set in place atop the tower just before getting dark. (See picture below)
Now that the tower and dome are up there is still much to be done before the radar can become operational. Then the radar has to go through an alignment and testing phase.
Once the Brandon radar is fully tested and declared operational the current radar located at the National Weather Service Forecast Office at the Jackson International Airport will be turned off and not used again at this location.
All of this should be completed by the time we celebrate the ten year anniversary of the initial installation of the Jackson radar on March 29th, 1993.
