Winter Travel

Although Severe Winter Storms are not very common in Mississippi, it is quite a different story across the Northern United States and across the Rockies. During the Christmas and New Year Holidays, many people from Mississippi will travel northward. Travelers must be prepared for winter weather. Below is a summary of preparations that should be taken.

Before you leave, your car should be equipped with reinforced tire chains.

Other supplies that may be needed include:

  • Extra Blankets
  • Extra Winter Clothes
  • A Non-Perishable Food Supply
  • Transistor Radio
  • Battery Booster Cables
  • First Aid Kit
  • Flashlight
  • Shovel

If you are caught in a Winter Storm and your car becomes stranded...Stay Put. Do not try to walk for help. You may get lost or suffer Hypothermia. Your car will provide an adequate shelter until help arrives. The one danger of staying in your car is CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING. The engine and heat in your car should be used sparingly and the window opened occasionally for ventilation. The tailpipe must be checked frequently to ensure it is not clogged. If more than one person is in the car, take turns going to sleep. If your stuck during the day, place an orange or red flag on your antenna. At night, leave the inside dome light on, not your headlights.

With proper planning and common sense. You can survive being stuck in a car. Even for a long period of time. With the proper preparations we will all have a safer winter...both at home and on the road.
