Product Guide: Non-Routine Products

Your National Weather Service in Huntsville occasionally issues other products of interest.  These products are only issued when needed.

Short Term Forecast (NOW) Latest Short Term Forecast
Go Back: 1 -- 2 -- 3 -- 4 versions
The "Short Term Forecast" is intended to be the primary way of communicating plain language forecasts of short term weather and appropriate hydrological conditions; for example,  thunderstorm movement and intensity, or forecast rainfall and snowfall amounts.  The forecast is usually issued every hour, but can be valid for up to six hours.  No forecast is issued during fair weather. If weather conditions are deemed to be significant, a "Significant Weather Alert" is issued instead.
Significant Weather Alert (SPS) or
Special Weather Statement (SPS)
Latest Significant Weather Alert
Go Back: 1 -- 2 -- 3 -- 4 versions

A "Significant Weather Alert" is issued in lieu of a Short Term Forecast when forecasters at NWS Huntsville believe a significant weather event is expected in the next hour or two. Significant weather can include gusty winds, frequent lightning, small hail, or other non-severe weather. This product may also be issued as a "Special Weather Statement", which can be used in a variety of ways to bring attention to potentially hazardous weather in the near future.
Public Information Statement (PNS) Latest Public Info Statement
Go Back: 1 -- 2 -- 3 -- 4 versions
The "Public Information Statement" may be issued for other reasons than those directly weather-related.  A Public Information Statement may talk about the NOAA Weather Radio, media events, or other non-weather related subjects.
Record Event Report (RER) Latest Record Event Report:
Muscle Shoals / Huntsville
Go Back:
1 -- 2 / Go Back: 1 -- 2
A "Record Event Report" is used to note when any climate record is tied and/or broken. Separate products are issued for records in Muscle Shoals and Huntsville.  This would include record high or low temperatures, and record rain or snow.  A Record Event Report will state what type of record has been broken, what the old record was, and what the new record is.
Air Quality Index (AQI) Latest Air Quality Index
Go Back: 1 -- 2 -- 3 -- 4 versions
The "Air Quality Index" product is issued when the Alabama Department of Environmental Management issues an Air Quality Alert for Huntsville. This is done to heighten awareness of air pollution and air quality issues.
Earthquake Information Report (EQR) National Earthquake Info Center
An "Earthquake Information Report" is sent out after an earthquake is felt in the area.  The report is preliminary, and may be updated if additional information is received.
