The Mobile, Alabama radar shows the strong thunderstorms in the eyewall of Hurricane Ivan approaching the Alabama Gulf Coast just before 12am on Thursday, September 16.

Moving much faster now, the Birmingham, Alabama radar shows the center of now-Tropical Storm Ivan moving past Demopolis at 2pm. Note the broad area of moderate to heavy rain streaming ahead of the storm!

The worst of the storm was being felt across the Tennessee Valley by the time this radar scan came into the NWS office in Huntsville at 4pm. While the center of the storm (and the end of the rain) is now approaching Birmingham, the bright yellow and orange shades show the heaviest rain falling east of Interstate 65. The strongest winds came during the early evening hours as this heavy rain band interacted with the approaching center of circulation.
