A very large oak tree,
thought to be at least 100 years old, was brought down by then-Tropical
Storm Ivan's strong winds between 1 and 2pm on Thursday. This occurred
about 5 miles west of Boaz (Marshall County) off Highway 168.
Ann's Grocery, a convenience
store in Laceys Spring, sustained major damage from Tropical Storm
Ivan as it rolled through. Winds tore the roof off the gas station
canopy and knocked one of the gas pumps off its foundation (visible
just to the left of the "Vulcan" sign). Fortunately, the
occupants inside the gas station were safe, and no one was injured.
Tropical Storm Ivan
also dumped quite a lot of rain on the Tennessee Valley, particularly
across northeast Alabama. The West Fork Little River flooded well
out of its banks in Desoto State Park, as shown in this picture.
This is normally a beach area where the water is usually just 3
feet wide.
Big Wills Creek in DeKalb
County also flooded out of its banks, particularly Thursday night
when it nearly flooded a nearby hospital. It was still out of its
banks on Friday (when this picture was taken) near where the creek
crosses under Interstate 59 (near the Highway 68 interchange).
Now for something a
little more serene. The setting sun Wednesday night illuminated
altostratus clouds that moved into the Tennessee Valley in advance
of Ivan, making for a beautiful yet ominous sunset.
