PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HUNTSVILLE AL
733 PM CDT TUE APR 2 2013

...TENNESSEE VALLEY FREEZE PROGRAM BEGAN APRIL 1...FROST PROGRAM
BEGINS APRIL 15...

EACH SPRING...THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BEGINS ISSUING FREEZE
WARNINGS AND FROST ADVISORIES TO WARN AGRICULTURAL INTERESTS ABOUT
COLD WEATHER THAT COULD BE HAZARDOUS TO AREA CROPS. THESE DATES ARE
SELECTED PARTLY FROM CLIMATOLOGY (WHEN LAST FROSTS AND FREEZES
TYPICALLY OCCUR) AND PARTLY FROM CONSULTATION WITH LOCAL AND
REGIONAL AGRICULTURAL EXPERTS (DETERMINING WHEN GROWTH IS EXPECTED
OR ALREADY UNDERWAY).

BASED UPON THESE INPUTS...THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN HUNTSVILLE
BEGAN ITS FREEZE WARNING PROGRAM ON MONDAY...APRIL 1. THIS MEANS THAT
A FORECAST OF SUB-FREEZING TEMPERATURES AFTER MONDAY WILL PROMPT THE
ISSUANCE OF A FREEZE WARNING. WARNINGS ARE TYPICALLY ISSUED 12 TO 24
HOURS IN ADVANCE OF THE EXPECTED FREEZE.

THE DATE TO BEGIN THE FROST ADVISORY PROGRAM HAS BEEN SET FOR
MONDAY...APRIL 15. THIS MEANS THAT A FORECAST FOR WIDESPREAD FROST
WILL PROMPT THE ISSUANCE OF A FROST ADVISORY...TYPICALLY 12 TO 24
HOURS IN ADVANCE. NOTE THAT PATCHY OR ISOLATED POCKETS OF FROST WILL
NOT NECESSARILY PROMPT THE ISSUANCE OF AN ADVISORY.

(FOR PURPOSES OF SIMPLICITY...NWS HUNTSVILLE DOES NOT ISSUE HARD
FREEZE WATCHES OR WARNINGS...OR FREEZE WATCHES.)
