Fall freeze information Title

Temperatures during the early fall often fluctuate significantly here in the Tennessee Valley, with daytime highs often reaching the 80s, especially early in the season, and nighttime lows in the 40s and occasionally in the 30s.  However, as the season progresses, freezing temperatures often make an appearance by the end of the October at many locations.  By early November, most locations will have experienced at least a light freeze.  Below is a table of average first freeze dates for the locations indicated.  Also, earliest average hard freeze dates are included.  A hard freeze, locally, is defined by temperatures at or below 28ºF.  Additionally, the earliest and latest first freezes on record are listed for each site.

It should be noted that small gaps do exist in the data and some years contain incomplete information.  Where gaps were considerably large, the break in the period of record was noted, as in the case for Bridgeport and Guntersville.  However, freezing temperature records were included only for years that contained a complete or nearly complete dataset.
