September 2013 Climate Summary for Huntsville and Muscle Shoals...


An overall pattern change from that experienced in much of July-August led to near to above normal temperatures for Huntsville and Muscle Shoals for the month of September.  The average monthly temperature of 73.8 degrees at Huntsville was 0.1 degrees above normal, ranking as the 43rd warmest September on record, while the average of 75.0 degrees at Muscle Shoals was 1.8 degrees above normal and ranked as the 35th warmest there.

September precipitation was variable across the area, with generally above normal precipitation in northwestern Alabama, and below normal precipitation in northeastern Alabama, including Cullman County and much of southern middle Tennessee (see precipitation graphics below).  At the Huntsville Internatoinal airport, precipitation was above normal.  Despite the generally higher precipitation amounts in much of northwestern Alabama, Muscle Shoals recorded below normal precipitation for the month. A daily precipitation record of 2.68 inches at Huntsville on September 21st, but no other precipitation records were set for the month.
