October 2013 Climate Summary for Huntsville and Muscle Shoals...


Warmer than normal conditions that began in September continued into October.  The average monthly temperature for Huntsville was 63.7 degrees, which was 0.9 degrees above normal.  At Muscle Shoals, the monthly average was a little warmer, at 63.9 degrees, which was 1.8 degrees above normal.  The high temperature for the month at Huntsville was 88 degrees, while high at the shoals was 91 degrees.  Both of these temperatures occurred on the 5th.  Although warmth prevailed for most of the month, a period of relatively cold temperatures occurred from the 17th through the 26th.  Huntsville and Muscle Shoals reported their first freezing temperatures of the cold season on the morning of the 25th, with low temperatures of 31 degrees.  A record low of 28 degrees was tied on the morning of the 26th at Huntsville.  This was the only record set during the month at either location.  Temperatures gradually warmed during the final week, with both locations reaching the low 80s on the 30th.

Precipitation for the month of October was below normal across the area, with totals ranging from as low as about one quarter of an inch in parts of Lookout Mountain in DeKalb County to around three inches in far western parts of Colbert and Lauderdale Counties.  Rainfall deficits ranged from around one inch below normal to around four inches below normal.  At Huntsville, the precipitation totaled only 0.67 inches, which was 2.92 inches below normal, ranking as the 11th driest October on record.  It was the driest October since 2005, when only 0.10 inches of rain were recorded.  The precipitation amount was greater at Muscle Shoals, totaling 1.81 inches, which was 1.62 inches below normal, ranking as the 45th driest October.
