June 2013 Climate Summary for Huntsville and Muscle Shoals...

Temperatures...

Temperatures for June took a reversal from the previous several months, ending a trend of cooler than normal temperatures that began in February and lasted until May.  Spring temperatures at Huntsville (March through May) ranked as the 13th coolest on record, but a shift in the large scale pattern brought much warmer airmasses into the region during the middle and latter parts of June.  The average temperature for the month at Huntsville finished at 78.9 degrees, which ranked as the 18th warmest June on record.  At Muscle Shoals, the average of 78.3 degrees ranked as the 28th warmest June.  No temperature records were set during the month despite the overall warmth.

Precipitation...

The character of precipitation was fairly typical for the month of June, exhibiting variability across the area due to the convective nature of rainfall this time of year.  At Huntsville, precipitation only totaled 2.21 inches, which was 2.08 inches below normal.  Meanwhile, at Muscle Shoals, precipitation tallied 4.68 inches for the month, which was very near the normal of 4.76 inches.  Other locations experienced above normal precipitation, mainly in Jackson, Marshall and southern DeKalb Counties.  Also, most of Lauderdale and Colbert Counties received above normal monthly rainfall.  Rainfall did not exceed one inch on any day at Huntsville, while Muscle Shoals picked up 1.14 inches on the 18th.
