February 2013 Climate Summary for Huntsville and Muscle Shoals

February temperatures averaged below normal across much of the area, as the large scale pattern flipped from that present during much of the winter, favoring repeated intrusions of cool air into the region.  However, temperatures average slightly above normal in portions of northwest Alabama, including Muscle Shoals.  The monthly average of 44.6 degrees at Huntsville was 1.1 degrees below normal for the month, while the average of 45.4 degrees at Muscle Shoals was 0.2 degrees above normal.  In fact, the average temperature for February was lower than that for January.  Temperatures rose and fell quite often during the month, with a very progressive weather pattern featuring short-lived cold and warm airmasses.  At Huntsville, temperatures reached the 60s on the 5th-7th, 9th-11th, 18th, 24th and 25th.  Often, high temperatures in between these periods were in the 40s and 50s, so daily high or low temperature swings of 15-20 degrees within two days were common.  Nevertheless, daily high temperatures were neither very warm or morning low temperatures very cold, with no records set for the month.
