AUGUST CLIMATE SUMMARY FOR HUNTSVILLE AND MUSCLE SHOALS

TEMPERATURES...

TEMPERATURES AT HUNTSVILLE WERE MUCH ABOVE NORMAL FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST...CONTINUING THE ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURE TREND THAT BEGAN DURING THE SPRING. IN FACT...THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 84.7 DEGREES...RANKS AS THE 2ND WARMEST MONTH IN THE HISTORICAL RECORD.  THE WARMEST MONTH ON RECORD FOR HUNTSVILLE STILL REMAINS THE VERY HOT AUGUST OF 2007. WHILE A COUPLE OF DAYTIME HIGH TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE SET FOR THE MONTH...IT WAS THE OVERNIGHT LOW TEMPERATURES THAT WERE VERY IMPRESSIVE. FOLLOWING A STRING OF ALREADY VERY WARM OVERNIGHT LOWS THAT CONTINUED THROUGH JUNE AND JULY...THE MONTH OF AUGUST WAS NOT TO DISAPPOINT. BY THE TIME THE VERY INTENSE HEAT WAVE BEGAN TOSUBSIDE DURING THE 4TH WEEK OF THE MONTH...16 RECORD HIGH MINIMUM TEMPERATURES HAD BEEN SET. THIS IS THE LARGEST NUMBER OF RECORD TEMPERATURES THAT HAVE OCCURRED FOR ANY SINGLE MONTH IN THE HISTORICAL RECORD AT HUNTSVILLE.  ADDITIONALLY...THE AVERAGE MINIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 73.8 DEGREES WAS THE WARMEST ALL-TIME AVERAGE FOR ANY MONTH ON RECORD. ON TWO MORNINGS...THE 4TH AND THE 9TH...THE LOW TEMPERATURE ONLY FELL TO A BALMY 79 DEGREES. THIS ESTABLISHED A NEW ALL-TIME RECORD HIGH MINIMUM TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST. ON THE 4TH...THE AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURE AT HUNTSVILLE WAS 91 DEGREES...WHICH WAS THE WARMEST DAY SINCE JULY 15TH 1954.

THE SITUATION WAS NOT MUCH BETTER AT MUSCLE SHOALS. ALTHOUGH TEMPERATURES WERE SLIGHTLY COOLER...THEY WERE STILL MUCH ABOVE NORMAL. WHILE NO RECORD HIGH MAXIMUM TEMPERATURES WERE SET FOR THE MONTH...RECORD WARM OVERNIGHT MINIMUM TEMPERATURES OCCURRED ON FIVE DAYS. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 83.7 DEGREES WAS THE 3RD WARMEST AUGUST ON RECORD...AND THE SEVENTH ALL-TIME WARMEST MONTH ON RECORD AT THE SHOALS. IN SIMILARITY TO HUNTSVILLE...AUGUST 2007 STILL REMAINS AS THE WARMEST MONTH ON RECORD FOR MUSCLE SHOALS.

PRECIPITATION...

THE DRY TREND THAT BEGAN IN JUNE CONTINUED THROUGH AUGUST FOR MUSCLE SHOALS. THE MONTHLY RAINFALL TOTAL THERE WAS 2.18 INCHES...WHICH WAS 0.78 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THE AUGUST TOTAL OF 3.46 INCHES AT HUNTSVILLE WAS SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL...BUT MOST OF THE RAIN THAT FELL FOR THE MONTH OCCURRED DURING HEAVY THUNDERSTORMS ON ONE DAY...THE 21ST.

ALTHOUGH A PERSISTENT HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM REMAINED OVER THE SOUTHEASTERN U.S. FOR MOST OF THE MONTH...THUNDERSTORMS MANAGED TO DEVELOP AROUND THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH AS WEAK UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCES MOVED ACROSS THE REGION. WHILE MANY LOCATIONS RECORDED BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION FOR AUGUST...SOME LOCATIONS DID RECEIVE HEAVY RAINFALL FROM THUNDERSTORMS. IN PARTICULAR...PORTIONS OF CULLMAN...CENTRAL JACKSON...NORTHERN MADISON...AND SOUTHERN LAWRENCE COUNTIES RECEIVED BENEFICIAL RAINS AND ENDED WITH ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL. THE RAINFALL IN THOSE AREAS WAS SUFFICIENT TO DROP THE D0 DROUGHT CONDITIONS THAT HAD DEVELOPED DURING JULY. IN FACT...THE 6.60 INCHES OF RAIN THAT FELL OVER SCOTTSBORO ON THE MORNING OF THE 17TH IS WORTH MENTIONING. THIS WAS THE SECOND GREATEST DAILY RAINFALL TOTAL ON RECORD FOR THAT SITE...ONLY SURPASSED BY THE 6.80 INCHES THAT FELL ON DECEMBER 23RD 1990. D0 DROUGHT CONDITIONS DID REMAIN BY THE END OF THE MONTH THOUGH...ACROSS MUCH OF MORGAN AND MARSHALL COUNTIES.
