NOAA's P-3 Hurricane Awareness Tour

Tuesday, April 15, 2008
at Galveston Scholes Field

On Tuesday, April 15th, NOAA's P-3 Hurricane Hunter Aircraft visited Galveston Scholes Field. This was the second day of a five day tour of the Gulf Coast for the P-3 Hurricane Hunter Aircraft. Onboard the plane was Bill Read, the new Director of the National Hurricane Center, Bill Proenza, Director of the Southern Region of the National Weather Service, Senior Hurricane Specialist Jack Beven, Hurricane Specialist Eric Blake, representatives from FEMA and of course the crew and scientists of the P-3 aircraft. The purpose of the Hurricane Awareness Tour was to raise awareness of hurricanes and their dangers along the Gulf of Mexico.

During the day, the P-3 aircraft was the focus of tours by over 500 5th grade elementary school students. Each student spent approximately 1 1/2 hours at Scholes Field learning about hurricanes from National Weather Service meteorologists and toured the P-3 aircraft. Static displays were set up by the Red Cross, the U.S. Coast Guard, Weather Research Center and local emergency management officials. Following the tours by the students, the P-3 aircraft was available for tours by the local news media, local emergency management officials and elected officials from the Houston/Galveston region. The pubic and media was invited to tour the aircraft and speak with the delegation between 3 PM and 5 PM.

This was an excellent opportunity for the students, media and general public that live in a very hurricane prone community to learn how storms are observed and how these observations are put into the forecasts that are issued by the National Hurricane Center. Participants also learned how the Red Cross and local Emergency Management are always preparing for the possibility of a hurricane visiting the Houston/Galveston region.

The hurricane awareness tour has been conducted for more than 25 years, alternating between the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, and is followed by NOAA's hurricane hazard education campaign during National Hurricane Preparedness Week which will be May 25-31. The Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1st.
