PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HOUSTON/GALVESTON TX

         ... RAIN CONTINUES THROUGH AUGUST...

...AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURES ABOVE NORMAL BUT COOLER
                THAN AUGUST OF 2011...

AN UPPER LEVEL RIDGE WAS DISPLACED TO THE NORTHWEST FOR MOST OF
AUGUST AND BY THE SECOND WEEK IN AUGUST AN UPPER LEVEL TROUGH WAS
OFF TO OUR NORTHEAST. THE DISPLACEMENT OF THE RIDGE ALLOWED FOR
SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TO DEVELOP ACROSS THE AREA. THE UPPER
LEVEL TROUGH WAS IMPRESSIVE FOR AUGUST WITH A JET STREAK JUST TO THE
NORTH OF SOUTHEAST TEXAS AND WE EVEN HAD SOME SEVERE WEATHER
REPORTED WITH IT (AUGUST 10TH). STRONG WINDS UPROOTED TREES
ACROSS PARTS OF WALKER AND MONTGOMERY COUNTIES AND NICKEL SIZED HAIL
WAS ALSO REPORTED ON THE 10TH.

AUGUST WAS MUCH COOLER THIS YEAR THAN LAST YEAR FOR ALL CLIMATE
SITES. FOR EXAMPLE...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE AT COLLEGE STATION
FOR AUGUST 2011 WAS 90.9 WHILE THIS AUGUST HAD AN AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE OF 87.2. DESPITE 2012 BEING COOLER THAN LAST
YEAR...AUGUST 2012 WAS STILL 1.9 DEGREES WARMER THAN THE 30 YEAR
NORMAL TEMPERATURE. DUE TO THIS AUGUST BEING MUCH COOLER THAN LAST
YEARS AUGUST... THE RACE FOR THE WARMEST YEAR ON RECORD HAS NOW
TIGHTENED. 2012 IS NOW THE SECOND WARMEST YEAR ON RECORD FOR
COLLEGE STATION TRAILING ONLY 2011. 2012 IS THE WARMEST YEAR ON
RECORD FOR THE OTHER THREE FIRST ORDER CLIMATE SITES. HERE ARE THE
FIVE WARMEST YEAR TO DATE AVERAGE TEMPERATURES FOR THE FOUR FIRST
ORDER CLIMATE SITES:
