                   TOTALS LESS THAN AN INCH...

THE SUMMER OF 2011 CONTINUES TO INFLICT TREMENDOUS HEAT ACROSS 
SOUTHEAST TEXAS. AUGUST 2011 WAS THE WARMEST MONTH EVER RECORDED 
ACROSS SOUTHEAST TEXAS AND THE WARMEST AUGUST EVER RECORDED. THE 
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN HOUSTON FOR AUGUST 2011 WAS 90.4 DEGREES. 
THIS IS 2.5 DEGREES WARMER THAN THE PREVIOUS WARMEST MONTH (AUGUST 
2010) WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 87.9 DEGREES. COLLEGE STATION 
CRUSHED IT'S PREVIOUS WARMEST MONTH BY 3.0 DEGREES AND GALVESTON 
BEAT IT'S PREVIOUS WARMEST MONTH BY 1.2 DEGREES. COLLEGE STATION HAS 
RECORDED A STAGGERING 58 DAYS WITH TEMPERATURES AT OR ABOVE 100 
DEGREES THIS YEAR TYING IT'S ALL TIME RECORD OF 58 DAYS (1917).
THIS RECORD WILL LIKELY FALL THIS AFTERNOON.

THE DROUGHT HAS TAKEN A BACKSEAT TO THE INTENSE HEAT OF RECENT DAYS 
BUT MAKE NO MISTAKE...THE DROUGHT IS ONGOING AND AUGUST 2011 WAS ONE 
OF THE DRIEST ON RECORD. THE CITY OF HOUSTON RECORDED IT'S SECOND 
DRIEST AUGUST ON RECORD. THE INTENSE HEAT PRODUCED NUMEROUS RECORDS.

WARMEST JUNE TEMPERATURE EVER RECORDED WITH A VALUE OF 105 DEGREES 
ON JUNE 5TH AND AGAIN ON THE 6TH. HOUSTON RECORDED IT'S WARMEST 
JUNE...3RD WARMEST JULY AND WARMEST AUGUST. THERE WERE FIVE DAYS 
THIS SUMMER WITH A TEMPERATURE AT OR ABOVE 105 DEGREES WHICH TIES 
THE SUMMER OF 2000.

THE INTENSE HEAT COUPLED WITH THE LACK OF RAIN HAS INTENSIFIED DROUGHT
CONDITIONS ACROSS SOUTHEAST TEXAS. MANY LOCATIONS FAILED TO TALLY
AN INCH OF RAIN DURING THE MONTH. THE CITY OF HOUSTON RECORDED
FIVE CONSECUTIVE MONTHS WITH LESS THAN AN INCH OF RAIN. JULY
PROVIDED A BRIEF RESPITE FROM THE EXCEPTIONAL DROUGHT BUT AUGUST
WAS VERY DRY AND ONCE AGAIN THE CITY OF HOUSTON REPORTED LESS THAN
AN INCH OF RAIN. THIS WAS THE SIXTH MONTH OUT OF THE LAST SEVEN TO
DO SO. THE 0.09 INCHES OF RAIN AT INTERCONTINENTAL AIRPORT WAS THE
SECOND DRIEST AUGUST ON RECORD FOR THE CITY OF HOUSTON. GALVESTON
ONLY RECEIVED A TENTH OF AN INCH OF RAIN DURING AUGUST AND THIS IS
THE THIRD DRIEST AUGUST ON RECORD FOR THE ISLAND. COLLEGE STATION
DID A BIT BETTER THAN IT'S TWO COUNTERPARTS...RECEIVING 0.29
INCHES FOR THE MONTH. THIS IS THE 11TH DRIEST AUGUST ON RECORD FOR
AGGIELAND. COLLEGE STATION HAS ONLY RECEIVED 0.39 INCHES OF RAIN
SINCE JUNE 23RD.

THE EAST COAST HAS BEEN EXTREMELY WET THIS YEAR AND TEXAS HAS BEEN 
VERY DRY. BELOW IS THE CONTRAST IN RAINFALL DATA BETWEEN HOUSTON AND 
PHILADELPHIA FOR AUGUST...THE SUMMER OF 2011 AND YEAR TO DATE

MORE TRIVIA...HOUSTON HAS ONLY RECEIVED 5.90 INCHES OF RAIN SINCE 
FEBRUARY 1ST AND PHILADELPHIA RECEIVED OVER THREE TIMES THAT MUCH IN 
AUGUST ALONE.    

STRONG THUNDERSTORMS ON AUGUST 26TH PRODUCED WIND DAMAGE IN POLK... 
BRAZOS...BURLESON...AUSTIN AND WALLER COUNTIES. HOWEVER...THE 
PRIMARY SEVERE WEATHER HAZARD WAS THE HEAT. A HEAT ADVISORY WAS IN 
EFFECT FOR THE ALMOST THE LAST THREE WEEKS OF AUGUST.
