...AUGUST 2010 HEATWAVE TO CONTINUE THROUGH THE WEEKEND...

A PERSISTENT UPPER LEVEL RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE CENTERED OVER THE
SOUTHERN PLAINS FOR THE LAST THREE WEEKS HAS BROUGHT VERY WARM
TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY TO THE REGION. A HEAT ADVISORY HAS
BEEN IN EFFECT FOR 15 OUT OF THE LAST 17 DAYS. THE HEAT ADVISORY
WILL LIKELY BE CONTINUED THROUGH THE WEEKEND AS HIGH TEMPERATURES
AGAIN SOAR TO NEAR THE CENTURY MARK. ALL FOUR PRIMARY CLIMATE
SITES ARE ON TARGET TO RECORD THEIR WARMEST AVERAGE TEMPERATURE
FOR AUGUST. YET NONE OF THESE CLIMATE SITES HAS RECORDED A RECORD
HIGH TEMPERATURE. HOW CAN THAT BE??? CHECK OUT THE LOW
TEMPERATURES. THESE VALUES HAVE BEEN ABYSMALLY WARM.

HERE ARE THE TOP FIVE AVERAGE LOW TEMPERATURES FOR THE FOUR
PRIMARY CLIMATE SITES THROUGH AUGUST 19TH:

            IAH HOU CLL GLS

         78.7 2010 78.8 2010 78.0 1902 82.9 1993
         78.7 1964 78.5 2007 77.9 2010 82.1 2010
         78.6 1962 77.4 2009 76.8 2009 82.1 1968
         78.3 1968 77.1 1997 76.7 2007 81.9 1927
         77.7 1956 77.1 1988 75.9 1962 81.9 1987

SINCE HUMIDITY LEVELS ARE SO HIGH...LOW TEMPERATURES HAVE HAD
DIFFICULTY COOLING AND HAVE STRUGGLED TO FALL BELOW 80 DEGREES.
HOUSTON INTERCONTINENTAL AIRPORT HAS ESTABLISHED OR TIED FOUR
RECORD HIGH MINIMUM TEMPERATURES SO FAR THIS MONTH. COLLEGE
STATION HAS ESTABLISHED OR TIED FIVE NEW RECORD HIGH MINIMUM
TEMPERATURES IN AUGUST. BUT THE PRIZE GOES TO HOBBY AIRPORT ON
HOUSTON`S SOUTHEAST SIDE. HOBBY AIRPORT HAS ESTABLISHED OR TIED
EIGHT NEW RECORD HIGH MINIMUM TEMPERATURES THROUGH AUGUST 19TH.

BELOW IS A TABLE WITH THE NUMBER OF 80 DEGREE OR HIGHER MINIMUM
TEMPERATURES FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST:

            IAH HOU CLL

          14 1964 6 2007 4 1902
          12 1962 5 2010 3 2010
           6 2010 3 1998 3 1914

           5 1968 2 2009 1 2009

SOUTHEAST TEXAS HAS HAD FEWER 100 DEGREE DAYS THAN LAST YEAR BUT
DAYTIME HIGH TEMPERATURES HAVE STILL BEEN ABOVE NORMAL. IN A
TYPICAL AUGUST (AND REALLY WHAT IS TYPICAL ANYMORE?)...HOUSTON
INTERCONTINENTAL AIRPORT RECORDS TWO DAYS WITH TEMPERATURES AT OR
ABOVE 100 DEGREES. COLLEGE STATION RECORDS 5 DAYS WITH
TEMPERATURES AT OR ABOVE 100 DEGREES AND HOBBY AIRPORT TYPICALLY
RECORDS ONE DAY DURING THE MONTH WITH A HIGH TEMPERATURE AT OR
ABOVE 100 DEGREES.

HOU 2 1 0

RAINFALL IS WELL BELOW NORMAL FOR THE MONTH. ALL FOUR PRIMARY
CLIMATE SITES HAVE RECEIVED LESS THAN AN INCH OF RAIN. ONCE
AGAIN...HOBBY AIRPORT WINS THE PRIZE FOR THE WORST WEATHER WITH
ONLY 0.09 INCHES OF RAIN SO FAR THIS MONTH WHICH IS CURRENTLY THE
DRIEST IN RECORDED HISTORY FOR THIS SITE.

                  RAINFALL THROUGH AUGUST 19TH

LOOKING AHEAD...THE UPPER LEVEL RIDGE REMAINS IN PLACE THROUGH
EARLY NEXT WEEK. ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED THROUGH
AT LEAST MONDAY. LONG RANGE MODELS DIVERGE A BIT WITH THEIR
SOLUTIONS TOWARD THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK. THERE IS A BUILDING
CONSENSUS THAT THE UPPER RIDGE WILL BEGIN TO BREAK DOWN AND SHIFT
WESTWARD. IF THIS OCCURS...SLIGHTLY COOLER TEMPERATURES AND A
SLIGHT INCREASE IN RAIN CHANCES CAN BE EXPECTED.
