         ...JANUARY WAS COLDER THAN NORMAL...

THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF THE NEW YEAR WERE UNSEASONABLY COLD. A COLD
FRONT CROSSED SOUTHEAST TEXAS ON JANUARY 7TH. STRONG ARCTIC HIGH
PRESSURE MOVED INTO THE CENTRAL PLAINS AND COLD AIR FILTERED INTO
TEXAS. HIGH TEMPERATURES ON JANUARY 8TH BARELY WARMED ABOVE
FREEZING IN HOUSTON AND STAYED BELOW FREEZING ALL DAY NORTH OF A
COLUMBUS TO CONROE TO CLEVELAND LINE. DESPITE THE UNSEASONABLY
COLD TEMPERATURES...THERE WERE ONLY TWO NEW RECORD LOW
TEMPERATURES ESTABLISHED. COLLEGE STATION SET A NEW RECORD LOW
TEMPERATURE ON THE 9TH WITH A LOW OF 18 DEGREES. HOBBY AIRPORT
ALSO ESTABLISHED A NEW RECORD LOW ON THE 9TH WITH A LOW
TEMPERATURE OF 21 DEGREES. A WARM UP ENSUED DURING THE MIDDLE OF
THE MONTH AND THE AREA ENDURED UNSEASONABLY WARM TEMPERATURES.
CONDITIONS TURNED COLDER TOWARD THE END OF THE MONTH. OTHER THAN
THE UNSEASONABLY COLD TEMPERATURES...HAZARDOUS WEATHER WAS AT A
MINIMUM.

DECEMBER WAS RATHER COLD AS WELL. THE TWO MONTH AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE FOR DECEMBER AND JANUARY FOR HOUSTON WAS 49.6 DEGREES.
THIS TIES FOR THE 7TH COLDEST DEC/JAN COMBINATION IN CITY HISTORY.
GALVESTON AND COLLEGE STATION EACH HAD THEIR 16TH COLDEST DECEMBER
JANUARY COMBINATIONS. THE COLDEST DEC/JAN COMBINATION OCCURRED IN
1983-84 FOR BOTH CITIES. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN COLLEGE STATION
WAS 44.3 DEGREES IN 1983-84 AND GALVESTON RECORDED 49.6 DEGREES
DURING THE SAME TIME FRAME.
