...SOUTHEAST TEXAS COLD SNAPS OVER THE LAST 20 YEARS...

A STRONG ARCTIC COLD FRONT IS EXPECTED TO SWEEP ACROSS SOUTHEAST
TEXAS EARLY THURSDAY...RESULTING IN A PROLONGED PERIOD OF VERY
COLD WEATHER FROM THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY. THIS COLD SNAP WILL
LIKELY RESULT IN THE COLDEST WEATHER SEEN IN SOUTHEAST TEXAS
SINCE AT LEAST JANUARY AND FEBRUARY OF 1996.

IN DECEMBER 1990...A MAJOR ARCTIC OUTBREAK AFFECTED THE AREA ON THE
23RD AND 24TH RESULTING IN HIGHS IN THE MID 20S ACROSS THE
NORTHERN COUNTIES...AROUND 30 IN HOUSTON...AND WIDESPREAD LOWS IN
THE TEENS INCLUDING IN HOUSTON. THIS WAS THE LAST COLD OUTBREAK
WHERE LOW TEMPERATURES DROPPED INTO THE TEENS OVER MOST INLAND
AREAS...WHILE AT THE SAME TIME HIGH TEMPERATURES ALSO REMAINED
BELOW FREEZING.

SINCE 1990...OTHER COLD OUTBREAKS HAVE OCCURRED BUT NOT AS SEVERE.

SIGNIFICANT COLD SNAPS SINCE THE DECEMBER 1990 OUTBREAK:

JAN 6-9 1996:
LOWS DROPPED TO THE TEENS INLAND AREAS INCLUDING IN HOUSTON.
HIGHS WERE GENERALLY IN THE 40S. THIS WAS THE LAST TIME THE
TEMPERATURE DROPPED BELOW 20 DEGREES IN HOUSTON.

FEB 1-5 1996:
LOWS BOTTOMED OUT MID TO UPPER TEENS OVER NORTHERN HALF...LOWER
20S AROUND HOUSTON. HIGHS WERE IN GENERALLY IN THE 30S TO LOWER
40S. SOME LIGHT WINTRY PRECIPITATION FELL. THIS WAS THE LAST TIME
THE TEMPERATURE DROPPED BELOW 30 DEGREES IN GALVESTON.

JAN 12-14 1997:
A MAJOR ICE STORM AFFECTED SOUTHEAST TEXAS. THE LOW TEMPS WERE NOT
EXCEPTIONALLY COLD. HOWEVER...THIS WAS THE LAST TIME THAT THE
HOUSTON AREA AND THE COASTAL COUNTIES SAW DAILY MAX TEMPERATURES
REMAIN AROUND OR BELOW FREEZING.

FEB 27-MAR 4 2002:
THE LAST COLD SNAP TO PRODUCE WIDESPREAD RECORD LOWS OVER SOUTHEAST
TEXAS. LOWS WERE LOWER TO MID 20S AROUND HOUSTON AND UPPER TEENS
NORTH. HOWEVER...DAILY HIGHS WARMED WELL INTO THE 40S TO LOWER
50S.

JAN 15-17 2007:
A SIGNIFICANT ICE EVENT AFFECTED THE NORTHERN HALF OF SOUTHEAST
TEXAS. MIN TEMPS WERE NOT EXCEPTIONALLY COLD BUT MAX TEMPS STAYED
BELOW FREEZING OVER THE NORTHERN HALF OF THE AREA. TEMPERATURES
WERE MILDER OVER HOUSTON AREA AND THE COASTAL COUNTIES.
