Outlook

An upper level storm system will deepen across the southwestern U.S. this weekend, and will slowly move eastward toward southwest Texas early next week. A cold front will move across west Texas and southeast New Mexico Sunday night and early Monday morning. Much colder air will spread across the region behind this front Monday. As the upper storm system approaches, precipitation chances will increase across the region late Sunday night, and will continue through Monday and Tuesday.

The airmass will likely be cold enough for either snow or a wintry mix of rain/snow across areas mainly north of Interstate 10 Sunday night. Cold air will likely remain locked across the region Monday and Tuesday. A chance of wintry precipitation will continue across much of the region Monday, then mainly across the Guadalupe and Davis Mountains, the Big Bend, and the lower Trans Pecos region late Monday into Tuesday as the upper storm system lifts across these areas.

The track of the upper storm system and the depth of the cold airmass are still uncertain. There will be the potential for snow accumulations late Sunday through Tuesday across portions of west Texas and southeast New Mexico if the airmass is sufficiently cold and the storm system tracks far enough south.

Those planning travel late this weekend or early next week should keep abreast of the latest forecasts and monitor the NWS Midland/Odessa website, NOAA weather radio, or local TV/radio outlets for possible winter weather products that may be issued later by the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Midland/Odessa.
