The best place to be during a tornado is in the southwest corner of a building or basement. |
NOT TRUE!!! The safest place is an interior room on the north side of the building or basement. |
The theory was that the debris would be blown to the northeast section of the building over persons seeking shelter in the southwest corner. However, the portion of the building towards the approaching tornado is always the worst location and tornadoes generally, but not always, come from the southwest. Research has shown that the southwest corner is twice as unsafe as the northeast corner. The best location is underground but since there are few tornado shelters, the next best place is an interior room on the north side of a building away from the outside walls and glass.
If a tornado threatens, follow these safety rules... |
In homes and small buildings, go to an interior part of the lowest level such as closets, bathrooms or interior halls. Get under something sturdy. |
If the tornado is upon you, don't even think about trying to escape it in your vehicle. Cars want to fly in tornadoes but are not very good airplanes. Your are much, much safer in your house. |
Avoid windows, doors and outside walls. |
Abandon trailers and mobile homes and get into substantial shelter. If there is no shelter nearby, lie flat in a ditch or ravine with your hand shielding your head. |
