Hydrologic watches, warnings advisories and outlooks address the rapid onset of flooding following heavy rains which fall in a short period of time. As such, these products tend to focus on areas rather than on particular watercourses.
Generally, flood/flash flood watches focus on large areas such as portions of states and are primarily county based. In contrast, Western Gulf River Forecast Center (WGRFC) focus is on longer-term flood events. Accordingly, WGRFC prepares forecasts for rivers or river systems detailing river stages at specific gauging points. These specific stage forecasts are folded into flood warnings which are normally issued by NWS Dallas/Fort Worth for specific rivers or river systems.
