Dam Failure
Definition
Dambreaks present a unique flood warning problem. At times, the dam may simply erode with the dam emptying relatively slowly. In these situations, river flood statements will be used. At other times, the dam may actually fail catastrophically, for example, during a heavy rainfall event or earthquake, resulting in a very dangerous flash flood-type situation. During these events, flash flood watches, flash flood warnings, and flash flood statements will be used.
Most, if not all, levee failures will be associated with flooding that is already in progress. The subject of levee failure should be included along with the associated river flooding. As such, the appropriate categories would be flood warnings or statements.
