While major winter storms are not as common here as they are farther north, winter weather can cause serious impacts across the area. Snowfall Picture of Heavy Snow in Decatur in March 2008 One of the heaviest snowfalls in recent years occurred in early March, 2008, when up to nine inches of snow fell in a swath from Eastland to Sherman. Sherman reported nine inches, Satellite Image of Heavy Snowfall Band across North Texas. while Denton had seven and Eastland had three.

Heavy snow is a somewhat rare event for North Texas, but freezing rain and sleet can and often do impact North Texas more frequently and more severely.

This is a good time, then, to review some winter weather facts and safety tips to help make the cold weather season a safe one in north Texas.

The latest CLIMATE PREDICTION CENTER forecast for Winter 2012-2013 for North and Central Texas suggests equal chances for temperatures to be above or below normal this winter with some chance for above normal precipitation.
