...WINTER WEATHER PREPAREDNESS WEEK CONTINUES...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WILL OBSERVE THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 1
THROUGH 5 2014 AS WINTER WEATHER PREPAREDNESS WEEK IN THE STATE OF
GEORGIA. EACH DAY THIS WEEK WE WILL DISCUSS A DIFFERENT ASPECT OF
WINTER WEATHER. TODAY WE WILL DISCUSS WINTER WEATHER PREPAREDNESS.

WINTER STORMS CAN KEEP YOU ISOLATED IN YOUR HOME FOR SEVERAL DAYS.
STOCK AN EMERGENCY SUPPLY OF FOOD AND WATER PRIOR TO THE ONSET OF A
STORM. INCLUDE A 3 TO 5 DAY SUPPLY OF NON-PERISHABLES LIKE... PEANUT
BUTTER... READY-TO-EAT MEALS AND A VARIETY OF CANNED FOODS. DON`T
FORGET MEDICATIONS... BABY ITEMS AND PET SUPPLIES... AND MAKE
SURE YOU HAVE A FIRST AID KIT... FLASH LIGHT AND EXTRA BATTERIES.

BE SURE YOU HAVE A SECONDARY WAY TO HEAT YOUR HOME IN THE EVENT OF A
POWER OUTAGE. USE HEATERS AND FUELS SAFELY TO AVOID FIRES. PRACTICE
EVACUATING IN THE EVENT OF A FIRE...AND DESIGNATE AN OUTDOOR MEETING
PLACE. CHECK THAT SMOKE DETECTORS WORK PROPERLY. NEVER USE A GRILL
TO HEAT YOUR HOME. DO NOT RUN GENERATORS IN AN ENCLOSED AREA OR
CLOSE TO THE HOME. THESE ITEMS CAN CREATE DEADLY CARBON MONOXIDE
FUMES.

WRAP PIPES WITH INSULATION TO PREVENT FREEZING. WHEN EXTREMELY COLD
TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED...ALLOW YOUR FAUCETS TO DRIP SLIGHTLY.
KNOW HOW TO SHUT OFF YOUR HOMES WATER SUPPLY SHOULD A WATER LINE
BREAK.

STAY INDOORS DURING STORMS AND PERIODS OF EXTREME COLD...ESPECIALLY
THOSE SUSCEPTIBLE TO COLD WEATHER...INCLUDING ELDERLY...CHILDREN...
OR THOSE IN BAD HEALTH. MOVE ANIMALS TO SHELTERED AREAS. PROVIDE
SOME FORM OF HEAT IF PETS OR LIVESTOCK CAN NOT BE MOVED INDOORS.

AVOID UNNECESSARY TRAVEL DURING A WINTER STORM. KEEP A STORM KIT IN
YOUR CAR...AND INCLUDE A BLANKET...FLASHLIGHT...FIRST AID
KIT...EXTRA CLOTHING...WINDOW SCRAPER...WATER...SMALL SHOVEL...MAP
AND SAND. AVOID TRAVELING ALONE.

BEING PREPARED MEANS HAVING THE NECESSARY INFORMATION TO MAKE
APPROPRIATE DECISIONS. REGULARLY TUNE IN TO NOAA WEATHER
RADIO...LOCAL TELEVISION...AND RADIO TO STAY INFORMED DURING WINTER
WEATHER EVENTS.
