...WINTER WEATHER PREPAREDNESS WEEK...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IS OBSERVING THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 1
THROUGH 5 2014 AS WINTER WEATHER PREPAREDNESS WEEK IN THE STATE OF
GEORGIA. EACH DAY THIS WEEK WE DISCUSS A DIFFERENT ASPECT OF WINTER
WEATHER. TODAY WE WILL DISCUSS WHAT TO DO WHEN CAUGHT IN A WINTER
STORM.

IF CAUGHT OUTDOORS... YOUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY IS TO FIND A SHELTER
TO STAY WARM AND DRY. IF A SHELTER IS NOT AVAILABLE... BUILD A LEAN-
TO FOR PROTECTION FROM THE WIND AND BUILD A FIRE FOR HEAT AND TO
ATTRACT ATTENTION TO YOUR AREA. PLACE ROCKS AROUND THE FIRE TO
ABSORB AND REFLECT THE HEAT. YOU CAN MELT SNOW FOR DRINKING WATER...
BUT TRY NOT TO EAT THE SNOW SINCE IT WILL LOWER YOUR BODY
TEMPERATURE.

IF CAUGHT IN A STRANDED VEHICLE... STAY IN THE VEHICLE AND RUN THE
MOTOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES EACH HOUR FOR HEAT. DON`T FORGET TO CRACK A
WINDOW FOR FRESH AIR TO AVOID CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING. MAKE SURE
THE EXHAUST PIPE IS NOT BLOCKED WITH SNOW. TURN ON YOUR DOME LIGHT
WHEN RUNNING THE CAR TO DRAW ATTENTION AND IF THE SNOW HAS
STOPPED... RAISE THE HOOD TO INDICATE YOU NEED HELP. OCCASIONALLY
VIGOROUSLY MOVE YOUR ARMS... LEGS... FINGERS AND TOES TO KEEP THE
BLOOD CIRCULATING AND HELP KEEP YOU WARM.

WHEN INDOORS... STAY INSIDE. WHEN USING AN ALTERNATE HEAT SOURCE
SUCH AS A FIREPLACE... WOOD STOVE OR SPACE HEATER... BE SURE TO USE
FIRE SAFEGUARDS AND PROPERLY VENTILATE YOUR ROOM. IF NO HEAT IS
AVAILABLE... CLOSE OFF UNNEEDED ROOMS... STUFF TOWELS IN CRACKS
UNDER DOORS AND COVER WINDOWS AT NIGHT. CONTINUE TO EAT AND DRINK AS
FOOD PROVIDES ENERGY FOR PRODUCING BODY HEAT AND FLUIDS PREVENT
DEHYDRATION. REMEMBER TO WEAR LAYERS OF LOOSE-FITTING... LIGHT
WEIGHT CLOTHING AND REMOVE LAYERS TO AVOID OVERHEATING SO YOU DON`T
PERSPIRE AND GET CHILLS LATER.
