Storm damage that occurred in Madison County, Georgia on May 6, 2003 was surveyed
by Vince DiCarlo, Warning Coordination Meteorologist from the
Weather Forecast Office in Greenville Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Based on this survey, and after conferring with the Madison County Emergency Management
Director, it was determined that damage was the result of a tornado.
The tornado touched down in the Harrison community in northeast
Madison county around 212 pm EDT, and continued east-southeast
into Elbert County. The damage path length in Madison County was
estimated to be about 3 miles, and the width from 100 to 200 yards.
The strength was categorized as "F1" on the Fujita Scale with winds
estimated between 75 and 100 mph.
About 20 home reportedly sustained damage and 2 mobile homes were
destroyed. Two chicken houses and other outbuildings were demolished.
Two vehicles were overturned. Many large trees were either uprooted
or snapped off along the path.
