June 2005 - An Unusually Cool Start
6/7/05 North Georgia experienced a rather unusual spell of cool weather in early June. During the first 3 days of the month, daily maximum temperatures were in the 60s at a time when 80s are expected. On June 1 Atlanta established a new daily record for the lowest afternoon high temperature when the mercury topped out at only 64 degrees. This was 2 degrees cooler than the old record of 66 degrees set in 1967.
June 1st was also one of the
coolest days ever recorded at any time during the month of June in Atlanta. There have been only 4 June days with cooler maximum temperatures...
As can be seen in the maps below, easterly winds caused cool wet air to become trapped against the Southern Appalachians. This lasted for 3 days. During that 3 day period the average temperature (which takes into account both the maximum and minimum daily temperatures) was only 65.3 degrees in Atlanta (3rd coolest 3-day period in any June on record), and only 63.7 degrees in Athens, which is 2nd coolest for any 3-day period in June. The coolest 3-day period occurred in June of 1967. ![]() ![]()
