The first big push of cold air occurred on October 28 behind a strong, but dry cold front. This resulted in temperatures falling into the lower to middle 30s across nearly all of northern and central Georgia. A few locations saw upper 20s...including Calhoun...
and Peachtree City. The southernmost station to report a freeze was Plains in Sumter County. This outbreak of cold air
settled over the area for several days. By the morning of the 30th... many locations (but not all) had recorded their first freeze for this season...including Rome...Athens...Columbus and Macon.
The next big push of cold air occurred in the middle of November. The
jet stream plunged southward and stayed
in that configuration for several days. This produced a series of cold fronts that ushered cold Canadian air all the way to the coast of
the Gulf of Mexico. This pattern resulted in the first Autumn freeze at the official reporting site in Atlanta...as the mercury
bottomed out in the teens and 20s across all of northern and central Georgia.
In mid-January a large arctic airmass engulfed much of the eastern half of the nation. In Georgia, this blast
of cold air sent temperatures down into the single digits at some locations.
In during the first week of February the jetstream made
a sharp dive south over the eastern part of the
country. This drove an airmass as cold as the one in mid-January down into Georgia, and dropped temperatures
down into the teens across all of central Georgia. Even Florida was affected by this episode with temperatures
dipping below freezing all the way down into the central part of the state.
The map below shows the lowest reported temperatures so far this season.
