The first cold spell to bring freezing temperatures to a wide portion of northern and central Georgia
occurred on the 7th and 8th of November. Temperatures across the area fell
into the middle 20s to lower 30s. Athens...Atlanta and Macon all saw their first freeze of the Fall season
on the 7th...Columbus on the 8th.
In December... a significant cold air mass settled over Georgia around the 18th, and sent
the mercury down into the lower to middle 20s at most locations. A few spots reported readings in the teens,
including Mineral Bluff and Summerville. This was the definitive end of the growing season.
January was colder than normal overall as the jetstream made several excursions into the southland.
This allowed large chunks of arctic air to plunge southward. In Georgia the two coldest air masses settled in
around January 3rd and 4th...and again January 21st and 22nd. Overnight readings dipped into the teens at most locations -
and into the single digits at a few spots in the extreme northern counties.
