Coldest Temperatures Reported so far in North and Central Georgia
Autumn / Winter 2005 - 2006
Track the intensity of cold snaps this winter season on this page.
(Updates are made daily before Noon Eastern Time.)

The first freeze of the 2005-2006 winter season occurred on the morning of October 26 when cold air surged into Georgia on northerly winds in the wake of Hurricane Wilma. The strong dip in the jet stream that sent Wilma racing northward off the Atlantic coastline caused a cold airmass to plunge southward through the Ohio Valley and all the way the the Gulf Coast. Freezing temperatures in Georgia occurred mainly north of a Carrollton to Toccoa line. A second night of freezing temperatures occurred on the 27th, with all of North and Central Georgia dipping into the upper 20s to middle 30s.

In November... a significant surge of cold air occurred on the 17th and 18th taking temperatures down into the middle 20s across nearly all of North Georgia... and into portions of Central Georgia - including Macon. A few locations in the north saw readings down near 20 - including Cleveland and Cedartown.

In December... A large Arctic airmass overspread much of the nation - including Georgia - from the 6th through the 10th bringing teens to some of the northernmost counties, and 20s across most of the rest of North and Central Georgia. Afterward there were several cold fronts that brought in successively colder air.

In January... The weather was warmer than normal...and no serious outbreaks of cold weather.

In February... The pendullum swung back to the cold side. The first half of the month was cold...with some of the coldest air of the season punching far south into Georgia toward the middle of the month.
