Student Volunteer Program
requirements for Weather (meteorology) Volunteers
High School Student Volunteers
Term: One day shadow.
College Student Volunteers (must receive college credit)
Term: Summer/School Year
Summer: Minimum of 24 hours per month
School Year: Minimum of 2 days per month of at least 12 hrs. total.
Orientation required as well as a 1 day class.
Each day would involve a volunteer completing his/her required or assigned tasks while working a Public Service Shift. This consists of:
Answering phones
Taking Storm Reports
Read and interpret forecasts
Pass any meteorological questions on to a forecaster
Pass ALL media phone calls to a forecaster or HMT
Each volunteer must participate in at least one upper air launch.
Each volunteer is required to complete the NOAA security course.
Each volunteer must shadow a Public and an Aviation Forecaster (1 day on Public and 1 day on Aviation.)
Each volunteer must complete his/her forecast for the specified site (1 time.)
Each volunteer will be required to participate and help in office related projects.
Each volunteer is required to complete 2 WES case scenarios.
Each volunteer is required to complete: 2 COMET modules for summer and 1 COMET module during the school year.
Each volunteer is required to participate in a field trip to the CWSU and the Griffin Co-op site.
Each volunteer is required to spend at least 1 day in the CPM room.
