On March 15, 2008 severe thunderstorms raked across much of North and Central Georgia. One of the 3 tornadoes that occurred that day struck Jefferson County before moving into Burke County. The tornado touched down at 615 pm EDT about 1 mile northwest of Wrens and traveled east 9 miles before exiting the county. Maximum sustained wind speeds were estimated near 120 mph. The maximum path width was one quarter of a mile. Significant roof damage to homes was observed during a damage survey conducted by the National Wather Service in Peachtree City, Georgia. Several mobile homes were destroyed in Mathews. Numerous trees were downed in Wrens... some of which fell on homes and structures. No serious injuries and no fatalities were reported.
