February 4-8, 2013 is Severe Weather Awareness Week for the state of Georgia. Severe weather is no stranger to the state. In 2011, there were 32 tornadoes across north and central Georgia, which ranks 3rd for the most number of tornadoes per year (1995-2011). As of February 1, 2013, 2 tornados have already occurred across the area. This week is the prime opportunity to learn about severe weather, actions to take when severe weather strikes and review your families preparedness plan as each day is dedicated to a different topic that addresses severe weather preparedness. This year, the topics to be covered include:


An important aspect of severe weather warnings includes the information received from the public and spotters. Not only do reports help the National Weather Service to verify warnings, but they help meteorologists to better relate radar data with corresponding observed weather. If you observe hail (quarter sized or larger), wind damage or a tornado, report it to the National Weather Service at 1-866-763-4466. Highlight of the week: The statewide tornado drill on Wednesday - February 6

A special test message will be issued around 9:00 am on NOAA Weather Radio
