In 1989, after receiving around 10 inches of rain from September 30th through October 1st, flooding continued over much of northeast Georgia along rivers, streams, low-lying pastures and timber land on this date. The stage on the Oconee River at Penfield reached over 8 feet above flood stage. In Madison County, rivers and creeks overflowed over many roads. One mobile home was totally destroyed by water and at least 12 bridges were washed out and another 12 to 14 bridges were badly damaged. In Oconee County, the library was flooded with permanent damage to books.
