Certifications

The National Weather Service will issue a "Certificate of Authority for Pilot Weather Briefing" when the employee successfully passes examinations in the following areas:

    1. Weather Analysis

    2. Satellite

    3. WSR-88D Weather Radar

    4. Pilot Weather Briefer Oral Exam

A passing score of 70 percent or better is required on all four exams. If the student fails an exam, the exam may be retaken about two weeks after the failure. The oral exam will be completed after the employee completes on the job training and both the employee and supervisor feel they are ready to take the oral exam.

In addition, the National Weather Service issues a "Tower Visibility Observers Certificate" for those personnel involved with augmenting surface observations. The passing score on this certification exam is 80 percent.
