June is typically a month where Spring patterns merge into
Summer Patterns. June can sometimes be a dry month;
yet often times is has been a wetter month than
most months of the year. From the 30 year
1971 to 2000 Normals, June is
the wettest month of all 12 at Del Rio, the
2nd wettest at San Antonio, the 2nd wettest
at Austin Bergstrom, and the 3rd wettest at
Austin Mabry. The long term record shows
the average June Rainfall to be
the 4th wettest month of all 12 at Del Rio, the
3rd wettest at San Antonio, the 3rd wettest
at Austin Bergstrom, and the 5th wettest at
Austin Mabry.
See listing for 5 wettest months of the year.
Dry June periods show up also, like June 2005, when
the only rains that came at some places was in the
predawn hours of June 1st.
A few notable historical floods that came in June is listed below.
Rainfall during these times was enhanced by
slow moving or stalled cool
fronts; early tropical cyclone activity;
and by slow moving or stalled low pressure
systems aloft.
The wettest periods in most Junes
has come in the early to mid part of the
month; however, some late June flood events,
like late June and early July of 2002 and
late June and early July of 1954
have shown up.
In June of 1913 on June 28 and 29, flooding was observed
over parts of Uvalde County.
Montell received 20.6 inches of rain in 24 hours.
Like 2002, in late June and early July of 1932 floods came to the Texas Hill
County, from June 30th to July 2nd, 1932.
Rains near Mountain Home in Kerr County reached 33.6 inches in 24 hours.
More widespread flooding came in May and June of 1935.
In June of 1935, heavy rains and flooding occurred across parts of
the Texas Hill Country east to Austin and south to San Antonio, Uvalde,
Del Rio, and La Pryor.
Rains amounting to near 20 inches occurred in some places in Early
to Mid June 1935. Extensive flooding was observed along many creeks, streams
and rivers.
Extensive flooding affected Austin by June 14 and 15, 1935,
where the Colorado River rose to just 1 feet below the worst recorded
flood for Austin, that came in July of 1869. Flooding along the Llano
River was the highest of record at that time. In
the middle of June in 1935,
heavy rains came to the West Nueces and Nueces River, plus Sycamore Creek.
Flooding was noted from north of Bracketville to along Sycamore Creek to the Rio
Grande, a few miles below Del Rio, and east to Uvalde. Rains at Uvalde on June
15, 1935 was 12.5 inches in 12 hours and 17.6 inches in 24 hours.
Rainfall in June of 1935 was 13.71 inches at Del Rio, the wettest June of record
for Del Rio. Rainfall of 9.71 inches in June 1935 was observed for Austin and
8.41 inches was measured at San Antonio.
After 1950 more floods show up in climate records.
In June 1954 the remnants of Hurricane Alice moved near
and north of Del Rio. In the midst of a long drought, a flood occurred from
north of Del Rio, down stream on the Rio Grande River to Eagle Pass to
Laredo and south of Laredo. Over 30 inches of rain fell north of Del Rio.
The newly completed Falcon Reservoir downstream was filled up in a matter
of weeks as the floodwaters moved downstream. Rainfall amounts near 35
inches was observed north of Del Rio.
In the 1980s, wet Junes came in 1981, 1985, 1986 and 1987.
On June 3 and 4, 1986 heavy rains begin late the night of June 3rd
to the early morning hours of June 4, 1986.
These heavy rains caused floods in San Antonio.
Heavy rains returned 2 weeks later on the 18th.
June 1986 was the wettest June for San Antonio with 11.95 inches.
From Mid May to Mid June 1987, a longer duration flood event came
to the area, and affected a large part of South Central Texas.
In June of 1988, 1989, and 1990 dry conditions followed.
In June of 1997 heavy rains from June 21 to 23 caused flooding over the
Texas Hill Country. Rainfall amounts with this rain event varied
from near 9 to near 21 inches over the Texas Hill Country, and
between 5 and near 10 inches over Central and South Central Texas.
In late June of 2002 and extending to early July of 2002,
heavy rains and flooding came to the Texas Hill Country to
adjacent parts of South Central Texas.
Floods returned in June 2004. In June of 2004 heavy rains and floods came
to not only South Central Texas, also a large part of
Texas had heavy rains in June 2004.

for the State of Texas.

The wettest June overall for Texas was in 1899, when the
statewide average rainfall was 6.76 inches.
In June of 2005 very dry conditions prevailed. This has occurred
in past Junes also. Such periods have produced some very hot
afternoons. On June 9, 1988 the high of 112 at Del Rio was the hottest day of record
for Del Rio. In June of 1998 a few very hot days came. The hottest June days
at Austin came on June 14th,
1998, when the high was 109 at Austin
Bergstrom and 108 at Austin Mabry.
The hottest June day at San Antonio also came in June
1998 on the 15th,
when the high was 107. The hottest day at Del Rio
in June 1998 was 108 on June 14th. The hot weather in June 1998 was followed
by more hot days in July of 1998. After a long stretch of moderated Junes
in the 1970s, conditions warmed up in June of 1980, bringing hot days in
late June of 1980.
On the other side of extremes, sometimes cool nights come to the area in
wake of cold fronts. Some of the coolest lows for June came June 3rd, 1919
when the low was 48 at San Antonio, 49 at Del Rio, and 52 at Austin.
Daylight length for the year peaks at between near 14 hours to 14 hours, 10 minutes
for South Central Texas on June 21st. The
