and slightly one of the wetter months on average at Del Rio.

show July as the 2nd driest month of the year at Austin Mabry.
At Austin Bergstrom July is the 2nd driest month from the 30 Year Normals,
and the Driest Month from the 1943 to 2004 averages.

San Antonio. The 1871 to 2004 average for San Antonio shows July in the middle,
as 6th driest or 6th wettest of all 12 months. At Del Rio, the

July Rainfall extremes illustrate vast contrast between no rain and extreme flood.
July is in the top 10 for wettest and driest months for Austin and San
Antonio. The driest months for Austin end up with no rain in July of 1871, 1884,
1895 and 1962 to the 7th wettest overall month, July 1919, and 10th wettest month, July
of 1903. For San Antonio one of the driest months
of record with no rain was in
July 1871 to the 2nd wettest month of record in July 2002, with 16.92

brought floods to the west part of South Central Texas and
Del Rio from around July 3rd to 20th. July 1976 was the wettest July of Record for Del Rio
with 13.18 inches.
Twenty Six Years later in July 2002 another July flood came to Central and South Central Texas.
During this event, the heaviest rains fell to the north
through northwest of San Antonio.

affects of the remnants of Hurricane Claudette, as it moved inland
over South Central Texas and continued west to parts of West Texas.
July 2003 was the 4th wettest July at San Antonio with 8.12 inches
and the 7th wettest July at Del Rio with 5.34 inches.
Looking further into climate records shows other summer floods. For Austin July of 1919, with 12.80
inches, was the wettest July of record. Rainfall variability was very
extreme in the 1950s, when from 1951-1956 drought years came. Although these were drought years, it was briefly interrupted by floods in
1952 and in the summer of 1954.
The 1954 flood was the result of the remnants of Hurricane Alice that moved near and
north of Del Rio in late June of 1954. In the midst of a long drought, a flood occurred from north of
Del Rio, down stream on the Rio Grande River to Eagle Pass to Laredo and south
of Laredo. Over 30 inches of rain fell north of Del Rio. in late June of 1954.
In July 1954, from July 27 to 30,
Tropical Storm Barbara affected parts of
Southeast Texas. In 1979, 25 years later, Tropical Storm Claudette moved to Southeast
Texas and caused floods.
The drought of 1970/1971 began to end at the end of July 1971 as
very wet conditions followed in early August of 1971 with floods west of San
Antonio. A Texas Hill Country and South Central Texas flood originated from the
remnants of Tropical Storm Amelia, that formed July
31, 1978 east of Brownsville, and moved to the Texas Hill Country in early August of 1978. This
caused 48 inches of rain in 52 hours near Medina, Texas. In the following
summer, the summer of 1979, Austin Bergstrom had 9.77 inches of rain in July, the
wettest July of record at Austin Bergstrom.
The dry periods around July are also worth mentioning. In the summer of

was a trace of rain in 1951, 1953, 1956,
1957 and 1998.
