August is a month where some of the hottest days of summer can
come, although this varies from year to year,
as sometimes days moderate from the summer heat from mainly rain events and
sometimes with cool fronts that are stronger than usual and bring rain, like
1974 and 1992. August can also be a month when
Tropical Storms affect the area more frequently, bringing
rains and floods. In some years when the moderating affects of
the Gulf of Mexico are blocked, sometimes the hottest days
of a year came in August, although this does not happen
every year.
Some of the hottest days in August have come from the
17th to the 31st. The monthly record highs for both Del Rio and San
Antonio have come in the last half of August. The August record high of
109 at Del Rio came August 17, 1969, and the August high for San Antonio was
108 on August 19, 1986. The previous all time high for August at San
Antonio was 107 on August 20, 1909. At Austin, the record high of August
was on Friday, August 8, 2003 when the high was 110 at Austin Mabry and 108 at
Austin Bergstrom. The previous all time high for August at Austin came on
August 18, 1923, when the high was 109.
Although many of the hottest days of any year have come in the last half of
August, the All Time High for Austin and San Antonio came during the heat wave
of early September 2000. The highest afternoon high of record for Austin
and San Antonio came September 5, 2000, when
Austin reached 112 and San Antonio 111. Del Rio had 110 on September 6,
2000, a record high for September; however 2 degrees lower than the All Time
high of 112 for Del Rio set June 9, 1988.
Vast rainfall extremes show up, especially at Del Rio. August 1998 at Del Rio
was the wettest month of record for Del Rio, when the area was affected by the
remnants of Tropical Storm Charley. In August 1998, 20.93 inches of rain
fell at Del Rio, the wettest August and Month
of Record at Del Rio. The driest
August rainfall
and driest months of record at Del Rio with no rain came in August of 1907, 1924, 1943, and 1952.
In the 1970s, two notable August Floods
came. The first one in August 1971 occurred with heavy rains
across South Central Texas, when the Drought of 1970/1971
Meteorologically ended. D Hanis and
Sabinal had flooding.
In early August of 1978, after
after a dry spell in the summer of 1978,
very heavy rains came to South Central Texas
and the Texas Hill Country from the
affects of the remnants of Tropical Storm Amelia.
In early August of 1978, Medina had 48 inches of
rain in 52 hours. Heavy rains and floods from
the remnants of Tropical Storm Amelia moved to
parts of West Texas and North Texas.
Sometime tropical storms and hurricanes affect the area
also. In August 1942 the remnants of a hurricane moved inland between
Austin and San Antonio on August 30, 1942. See
More Information on the Hurricane of August 1942. This caused extensive wind
damage across South Central Texas. The August of 1942 hurricane that caused so much damage to South Central Texas is a reminder that Texans living
well away from the coast can receive damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and even tornadoes.
In early August of 1970, Hurricane Celia moved from the Texas Coastal
Bend near Corpus Christi to south and west of Del Rio. This brought
winds and rains to South Central Texas. In
August 1980, Hurricane Allen moved over the southern part of South Central
Texas, bringing locally heavy rains, winds and isolated tornadoes.
In August of 1983 and August of 1989, rains affected parts of
South Central Texas on the west side of Hurricane Alicia in August
1983 and Hurricane Chantal in August of 1989. In
August 1998 Tropical Strom Charley moved across South Central Texas, bringing
rains and winds, with floods at Del Rio.
