May 2007 Weather in Review
|
May 2007 continued the trend of stormy events that began around
March 11th and 12th, although for May this is not unusual either
since it is on average one of the wetter months of the year for
South Central Texas. Showers and thunderstorms were active in
the area from the 1st to the 3rd, the 6th to the 10th, late the 15th
and on the 16th,
the 22nd to the 28th, the 29th over Burnet and Llano Counties, and
in the early morning hours of the 31st over the
northeast part of the area, including the Austin Metropolitan Area.
On the first 3 days of the month showers and thunderstorms moved
across the area in several waves that brought locally heavy rains,
hail reports and strong winds. On the weekend of the 5th and 6th
most of the thunderstorm activity stayed over the west part of
the area. This activity increased the night of the 6th to early
morning of the 7th, when heavy rains caused flooding over the
west part of the area. Del Rio had a record rainfall for
May 7th of 2.13 inches. The storms developed further east the
evening of the 7th to the early morning of the 8th. The storms
returned the night of the 8th to the 9th and 10th. In wake of
a cool front more stable weather showed up the 11th and continued through the 14th. One of the warmer days of the month was on
the 13th. Showers and thunderstorms increased again late the
15th to the 16th, associated with another rain
making weather system and weak cool front. More stable conditions the
17th to the 19th did not last long as showers and thunderstorms
increased again by the 20th and 21st. The week of the 20th to the 26th saw
storm activity steadily increase. By the 23rd to 24th numerous
showers and thunderstorms broke out, and another cool front
moved across the area the night of the 24th to morning of the
25th. This brought a very heavy rain event to the hill country
to the Del Rio area the night of the 24th to morning of the 25th.
Del Rio had another daily rainfall record the 25th with 2.68
inches of rain, and a wind gust to 63 mph during a severe
thunderstorm. The high of 74 at Austin Bergstrom the 25th
set a record daily low maximum for May 25th.
The rainy pattern continued over the
Memorial Day weekend on Saturday and Sunday. Showers and thunderstorms
with heavy rain broke out Sunday afternoon and evening, and caused
some flooding. The heavy rains moved east in the night to
early morning hours of Monday May 28th. Austin Mabry picked
up 2.25 inches of rain, while Austin Bergstrom had 1.67 inches
of rain. After daybreak the 28th most of the storms moved
east of the area; however by late afternoon the storms
developed again over the east part of the area, then broke up in
the evening. On the 29th, conditions were warm and mostly
dry, then in the evening thunderstorms developed over parts
of Burnet and Llano Counties. The 30th was kind a repeat,
with mostly dry and warm conditions in the day. Thunderstorms returned
after midnight the 30th to the early morning of the 31st.
This brought a wave of thunderstorms
across the northeast part of area,
where locally heavy rains caused some flooding.
Skies cleared up in the day of the 31st, with mostly dry
and warm conditions in the afternoon. Like the 13th, the
afternoons of the 30th and 31st were among one of the warmer
afternoons of the month.
After one of the cooler Aprils of record, temperatures in May this
year were moderated compared to May of 2005 and 2006.
In addition to the shower activity, more clouds than usual and
several cool fronts helped to moderate temperatures.
Also there were some mornings where more fog than usual
delayed the onset of daytime heating. May 2007 had much more
fog conditions than usual for the 5th month of the year.
It was a tie
for the 8th coolest May on record for Del Rio, with May of 1917
and 1926, and for a tie for the 8th coolest at Austin Bergstrom
with the stormy and rainy month of May 1972. No 100 degree days
were observed across
South Central Texas, and few 90 degree days showed up.
During May of 2007, Austin,
Georgetown, Giddings, La Grange,
New Braunfels, and San Marcos had the first 90 degree day of the
year on May 13th. On the 30th Uvalde, Rocksprings,
Fredericksburg and Pleasanton reached 90 for the first time this
year. Del Rio had the first 90 degree day on March 14th.
For San Antonio the warmest day in May was 89 on the
13th, 15th, 23rd, and 30th. The last time it did not reach 90
at San Antonio by May was in 1977, when the first 90 degree day
was June 6th. San Antonio had the first 90 degree day of 2007
on June 2nd.
