In addition to being one of the wetter Julys, July 2007 was the
coolest July since 1976 at Austin, Del Rio and San Antonio.
The July 2007 storminess was an extension of a rainy period
that began around March 11th and 12th and extended through
April, May, June, and July this year.
In July 2007 frequent heavy rain events developed at all times of
the day or night. The rainfall was not only heavy at times, it also lasted
for most of the month, a much longer time span than usual.
July of 2007 had a few days with daytime highs in the 70s to near 80,
like what was observed during the wet July periods of 1976 and 2002.
There were many more early morning periods
of fog than usual also for a summer month, that at times made
it look more like fall in the early morning.
The tables below show how July 2007 compared to previous Julys.
At San Antonio...
2nd wettest July and 3rd coolest July after July of 1903 and 1976.

Rainfall for July 2007 at the New Braunfels Municipal
Airport was 16.92 inches. The wettest July of record
for the New Braunfels Coop Weather Station since 1893
was 10.44 inches in July of 1942. The wettest
All Time month at the New Braunfels Coop Weather Station
was 17.51 inches in the floods of December 1991.
Rainfall at other locations in July include the following...
Hondo 8.34...Burnet 4.94...Georgetown Airport 8.24...
and San Antonio Stinson 9.09 inches of rain.
July began as a wet month right out of the gate with daily
showers and thunderstorms the 1st to the 8th and morning of
the 9th. The 10th to the 12th was the calmest period
weatherwise in the month with partly cloudy, warm and dry
days. Another extended period of unsettled weather with showers and
thunderstorms came the 13th to the 18th. Rain activity decreased slightly the 19th, then increased to periods of
heavy rain again the 20th. Heavy rains on the 20th left
8.09 inches of rain at the New Braunfels Municipal Airport.
After briefly calming down in the evening of the 20th,
showers and thunderstorms increased again in the late
night of the 20th and continued through the 21st.
Very heavy rains fell over parts of Medina County
in the morning of the 21st. Calmer weather came Sunday the 22nd.
This did not last long though, as showers and thunderstorms
increased from the north in the late afternoon and evening
of Monday the 23rd. Rain, heavy at times, with showers and
thunderstorms returned the 24th to the 26th. On Friday the
27th, less shower activity came; however, isolated showers
and thunderstorms did show up in the afternoon. Showers and
thunderstorms increased again the weekend of the 28th and 29th.
Waves of heavy rain came to the west part of the area on the
29th and 30th.
Del Rio picked up 2.99 inches of rain the 29th to the 30th. On the 31st
calmer weather came to the area, with mostly sunny skies and
summer like temperatures.
July rainfall in the past shows vast extremes from lots of rain,
like July 2007, 2003, 2002, 1976 and 1973 to those Julys that get little
if any rain.
Off all 12 months of the year, July has some of the top 10
wettest and driest months for Austin and San Antonio.
On average July is one of the drier months of the year at Austin;
in the middle of one of the drier or wetter months of the year at
San Antonio; and slightly one of the wetter months on average at Del Rio.
The average rainfall for July does not
represent these extremes, although cumulative yearly
information from the mid to late 19th century shows that July
was usually a drier month more times than a wet month.
Another rainfall measure that illustrates this for July
rainfall is the median.
For Austin, Del Rio, and San Antonio, the median rainfall
for July is much less than the long term average.
The rainfall median is a statistic that shows the
midpoint value for a given data set of rainfall.
Half of the months are wetter than the median,
and half of them are drier than the median.
The July long term average rainfall and the median July rainfall
is listed below.
Location Long Term Average Median
Austin Bergstrom (1943-2007) 1.79 0.94
Austin Mabry (1856-2007) 2.21 1.61
Del Rio (1906-2007) 1.91 1.27
San Antonio (1871-2007) 2.30 1.41
Since Year 2000, 2007 represents the 3rd time in the past 8 years that a
wet July has come. From 1970 to 2000 a few wet Julys show up in the
record books. July of 1973 brought heavy rains to the area.
In July of 1976 a 3 week period of rains brought floods to the west
part of South Central Texas and
Del Rio from around July 3rd to the 20th. At Del Rio, July 1976
was the wettest July for Del Rio
with 13.18 inches.
In July 2002 another July flood
came to Central and South Central Texas.
During this event, the heaviest rains fell north
through northwest of San Antonio. July 2002 was not
only the wettest July of record at San Antonio, it was also
the 2nd wettest All Time month after October of 1998.
July 2003 was another July with above average rainfall from the
affects of the remnants of Hurricane Claudette, as it moved inland
over South Central Texas and continued west to parts of West Texas.
The unique rainfall pattern for July 2007 was that the rain covered
a large area and lasted for most of the month, mainly from the
1st to the 30th, with a brief pause from the 10th to the 12th;
on the 22nd; and a dry and warm ending on the 31st.
The dry periods around July are also worth mentioning. In the summer of
1993, the month of July was very dry, in wake of floods in the Spring of 1993
and also in June of 1993. There was 65 consecutive days of no measurable rain in Austin from June 27th to August
30, 1993. For San Antonio, in the summer of 1993 there was 63 consecutive days of
no measurable rain from June 27th to August 28th, 1993. Of the 20 driest
months for San Antonio since 1871, 4 occurred in July, with no rain in July of
1871 and 1944 to a Trace of rain in July of 1984 and 1993. For Austin
among the 20 driest months since 1856, 4 have also occurred in July with no rain
measured in July of 1871, 1884, 1895, and 1962.
The driest Julys at Austin Bergstrom was no rain in July of 1947 and a trace of
rain in July of 1993.
For Del Rio, the driest Julys of record
was a trace of rain in 1951, 1953, 1956,
1957 and 1998.
