August 2007 Weather in Review
|
Drier and much warmer weather came August 1st to 15th
and then like the rest of the Summer of 2007, a change to
wetter conditions came August 16th
as Tropical Storm Erin made its way across South Central
Texas, from the Coastal Bend in the early morning of
August 16th to near San Antonio in the late afternoon.
What was left of Tropical Storm Erin moved west
and northwest of San Antonio in the evening of the 16th
to north of Rockspirngs in the predawn hours of Friday
August 17th. Drier days showed up the 18th and 19th, and then
the trend toward more rain returned the 20th and continued
through the 31st.
Compared to most August months for South Central Texas,
August 2007 had moderated temperatures; however, August 2007 was much warmer
than the cool spring temperatures and below normal temperatures in
June and July of this year.

August began with widely scattered showers and thunderstorms
for the first few days of the month. A drier and much warmer
pattern developed the weekend of the 4th and 5th. Sunny days
with dry weather continued through the 15th.
The warmest days of the year from January 1st to August 31st
came from August 10th to the 15th. The first of a string of
three 100 degree days at Austin Mabry for 2007 came August
the 12th, where the high continued to be 100 on August 13th and 14th.
The high reached 100 at New Braunfels on August 13th.
Conditions quickly changed late in the day of August 15th ahead of
Tropical Storm Erin, that moved across South Central Texas on
Thursday, August 16th. This brought heavy rains to the area.
The rain increased rapidly across the area from the east and
southeast in the predawn hours of the 16th and this continued
during the day of the 16th.
The rain became widespread from east and southeast of San Antonio
to San Antonio and Hondo and extended north across the
Hill Country. The heaviest rain was from Wilson, Bexar,
Medina and parts of Comal County, north to Bandera, Kendall,
Gillespie and Blanco Counties.
These heavy rains caused flooding in the area.
The most rain fell between Boerne and Fredericksburg,
over northern Kendall and southern Gillespie Counties, where
rainfall amounts of 11 to 12 inches was observed on August 16th.
August 16th was the wettest August Day at the San Antonio
International Airport location, with 5.73 inches of rain, more
than the previous wettest for August of 5.57 inches on August 13, 1950.
San Antonio Stinson Field had 9.60 inches on the 16th.
Widely scattered showers lingered August 17th, then conditions
dried up for a short time the weekend of the 18th and 19th.
Widely scattered showers and thunderstorms increased over the
area again Monday the 20th through Thursday the 24th. Some
of this activity was associated with the extreme northern
bands of Hurricane Dean, and a weak area of low pressure
aloft. When Hurricane Dean was over the southern Gulf of
Mexico on Wednesday and Thursday the 22nd and 23rd,
the outermost bands of Hurricane Dean caused areas of
showers to form over the area mainly during the daylight
hours.
On the weekend of the 25th and 26th, an area of low pressure aloft
developed over the area from the east and southeast.
This setup a pattern of more daytime to early evening
showers and thunderstorms the week of
Monday the 27th to Friday the 31st. Isolated heavy downpours
of rain caused between 2 and 3 inches of rain at Speaks
and Comfort on Wednesday the 29th.
On Thursday the 30th, 1.07 inches of rain fell at Del Rio
in a short period of time, along with a wind gust of 48 mph
in a thunderstorm. On the last day of the month rain came
in several waves beginning in the late morning and
continuing through the evening hours. Scattered
daytime showers and thunderstorms produced locally
heavy rains in Bexar, Wilson, Gonzales, Guadalupe,
Medina, and Lavaca Counties. Another line of
thunderstorms formed between Caldwell and Austin
in the late afternoon and moved southwest across
Williamson, Travis, Lee, Fayette, Bastrop, Burnet,
Llano, Hays, Blanco, and Gillespie Counties in
the evening. Rainfall amounts of one half to
near 1 inch fell in the Austin Area, along with
wind gusts to near 40 mph.
The thunderstorms
brought cooler air and made the low of 70
at Austin Mabry, the coolest temperature for
the month of August at the Austin city climate
location.
The updated outlook from the Climate Prediction Center for
September 2007 calls for the average monthly temperature to
have Equal Chances of being above, below or near normal.
The rainfall shows a slightly better chance of rainfall
being above the September 30 Year 1971 to 2000 Average.
