Stormy weather came to the area in April 2007.
Extremes in temperature in the first half of the month made
it seem more like a winter month than a spring one, yet the
severe storms that came in the mid to late part of the month
fit the stormy spring weather patterns.
April 2007 began mild and dry, and then a cold front moved across
the area on April 4th, bringing cooler temperatures the 5th and
6th. Thunderstorms formed near the cold front the 4th in the
Austin Area,
where Austin Bergstrom picked up 1.55
inches of rain and Austin Mabry had 0.10 inches of rain.
Colder conditions followed on the 7th to the 9th, in wake
of a stronger cold front on the 6th.
Cold north and northeast winds of 10 to 20 mph moved across the
area the afternoon and evening of Friday April 6th, with
temperatures falling 20 degrees overnight. Occasional light rain
in the early morning to daytime and evening of April 7th, with
cold north and northeast winds caused temperatures to fall
an additional 5 degrees in the day on the 7th. Afternoon
temperatures the 7th were 30 to 35 degrees colder than on Friday
the 6th. Some
of the precipitation changed to sleet from around and
north of Del Rio in the afternoon of the 7th, to the Texas Hill Country
and east to a line from Georgetown to Austin, San Marcos and San Antonio.
Light snow was observed in Llano and Burnet Counties and
extending east to parts of Williamson and Travis Counties.
Some areas received measurable snow, notably 10 miles northwest
of Llano, over parts of Burnet County and parts of Williamson
County. Trace amounts of snow was observed in the Austin Area
at Austin Bergstrom International Airport, where a Trace of
snow was observed.
Further to the south, mainly south of Highway 90 near Del Rio
to south of San Antonio and southeast of IH-35,
mostly cold rain was observed.
A few record daily lows and daily low high temperatures was
observed in the early April of 2007 cold spell.
At Austin, a record low of 34, and a record low high temperature
of 50 was observed at both Austin Mabry and Austin Bergstrom on
Saturday the 7th. At Austin Bergstrom the same high and low
of 50 and 34 occurred again Sunday the 8th, both record lows
and record cold high temperatures. A trace of snow was
observed at Austin Bergstrom, while sleet was
observed at both locations. At San Antonio the high of
54 on Saturday the 7th was a record low high for April 7th.
The low of 35 at San Antonio the 7th tied the record low
of 35 previously seen April 7, 1996. The low of 35 at
San Antonio the 8th set a record low for April 8th; however
the high of 51 was 6 degrees above the record low high of
45 set April 8, 1928. At Del Rio a record low high of 51
was observed April 8th, and low of 38 tied the record low
of 38 set April 8, 1938. On Monday April 9th, clouds lingered
over the area, and temperatures only moderated to the 50s to
near 60.
The presence of winter precipitation in the early April 2007
event was rare for the area. Previous occurrences can be
traced back to April 1928, when measurable snow was recorded
at Junction and Llano. Since 1970, the severity of cold in early April
based on extreme monthly and early April low temperatures only
was greater in the 1996; 1987; 1980, and 1973 cold outbreaks.
A cold outbreak in late April 1982 and late April of 1997
was extreme when considering daytime highs and lows,
for a late April setting.
A warming trend followed the 10th to the 13th. A line of
thunderstorms developed during the early evening of April 13th
around Del Rio, and then moved east across South Central Texas,
bringing strong winds and hail. The storms continued across the
east parts of South Central Texas during the predawn hours of
Saturday, April 14th. Cooler conditions followed the weekend
of the 14th and 15th. Scattered showers and thunderstorms came
to the area again on the 17th, associated with another cool front.
Clouds increased across the area the 21st to the 22nd, ahead
of a spring storm system, that brought severe weather the
23rd and 24th.
A spring storm system formed over the
southwest U.S. on Monday, April 23rd. This storm system caused
severe weather events at Del Rio on Monday evening, April 23rd,
followed by a widespread severe weather event the evening of April 24th
to the predawn hours of Wednesday, April 25th.

evening the 23rd. A Tornado was reported at 806 pm and again at 834 pm

a tornado touched down in the Eagle Pass Area.
As the spring storm system moved to West Texas in the afternoon
of the 24th, a widespread severe weather event developed rapidly just south
of Del Rio and west to northwest of Eagle Pass, near the
Rio Grande, and then moved east as a
line of thunderstorms across
South Central Texas Tuesday evening to the predawn hours of
Wednesday, April 25th. On the evening of Tuesday the 24th,
a devastating tornado struck Eagle Pass at 701 pm. The tornado was
rated EF-3 on the enhanced Fujita Scale, had a path width of one-quarter
mile and a path length near one mile long. These devastating
severe, tornadic thunderstorms in the Eagle Pass area caused
7 Fatalities, more than 80 Injuries, and numerous property damage to
homes, businesses and an elementary school in the Eagle Pass Area.
The severe thunderstorms then proceeded to move across the rest of
South Central Texas from 8 pm, April 24th through 6 am, Wednesday

the 29th moved east to become a widespread weather event
Monday the 30th over South Central Texas. Heavy rain with
