Year 2007 was a mixed year rain wise, beginning the first 8
months as one of the wetter years on record, and then having
rains shut down by mid September. Despite the dry fall, the year
still made the top ten wettest years at Austin Bergstrom,
Del Rio and San Antonio, and the 12th wettest year at Austin Mabry.
It was also a year that brought stormy periods, first in January, more stormy events from March
through September, and a few shorter duration stormy weather events in
October and November.
The first storm event came early
on January 13th, with severe thunderstorms and heavy rains from San Marcos to
Austin. A tornado was reported in San Marcos. Shortly thereafter a widespread ice
storm came January 15th to 17th. This was the most widespread
winter precipitation event for the area since the January 1985 heavy snow
event over South Central Texas. In addition to freezing rain and sleet, spotty 1
to 2 inch snowfall was common over the hill country and Edwards Plateau. A late season cold precipitation event
in early April brought a mix of cold rain and winter precipitation April 7th to the early morning hours of April 8th.
Sleet was reported along and north of a line from Del Rio to San Antonio to San
Marcos to Austin and Georgetown. Light snow was observed in Llano and
Burnet Counties and extended east to parts of Williamson and Travis
Counties. Snow flurries were observed in the Austin Area and Austin
Bergstrom International Airport received a trace of snow. Like January,
the early April precipitation event was not a normal year to year
occurrence.
February of 2007 was the 3rd driest February at Austin Bergstrom;
the 6th driest at Austin Mabry and San Antonio; and the 13th driest
at Del Rio. A dry Arctic cold front moved across the area on
February 13th. Lows on February 16th were the coldest lows for
the Winter of 2006/2007 season.
After a dry February, a period of above normal rainfall started
in the last days of winter, the weekend of March 11 and 12, and lasted
through April, May, June, July, August, and early September.
Many active weather events in this period brought thunderstorms
that produced high winds, frequent lightning and in some cases
tornadoes. A destructive and widespread Tornado Event came to
Eagle Pass on April 24th. As the storms moved east, they brought strong winds to
parts of South Central Texas in the late night of April 24th and predawn hours
of April 25th.
A series of storm events and heavy rains continued in May and June through July.
Very heavy rains developed in Burnet and Llano Counties in the late night
of June 26 to early morning hours of June 27th. Rainfall over the southern
half of Burnet County was between 10 and 15 inches, with the highest rain total in the
Marble Falls area, where up to 19 inches of rain fell. Over 8 inches of rain was
measured in a one-hour period near Marble Falls.
As early August came a stretch of warm and dry days came, and some of the warmest
days of the year were from August 12th to 15th. As conditions tried to get
warm and dry in early August,
along came Tropical Storm Erin, bringing heavy rains August 16th.
The heaviest rain was from Wilson, Bexar, Medina and parts of Comal County, north to Bandera, Kendall, Gillespie and Blanco Counties. These heavy rains caused flooding in the area. The most rain fell between Boerne and Fredericksburg, over northern Kendall and southern Gillespie Counties, where rainfall amounts of 11 to 12 inches was observed on August 16th. August 16th was the wettest August Day at the San Antonio International Airport location, with 5.73 inches of rain, more than the previous wettest day for August of 5.57 inches on August 13, 1950. San Antonio Stinson Field had 9.60 inches on the 16th.
August 2007 was the 10th wettest August at San Antonio.
Showers and rain continued in late August and early September,
and then shut down fast in mid September.
In addition to ample rains, June to August of 2007 was
one of the more moderated summers in many years. More clouds, rain,
showers and thunderstorms than usual, accompanied by more soil moisture,
moderated daytime highs considerably.
Dry fall weather prevailed in October and November, and a few
fast moving Pacific cold fronts brought brisk northwest winds and
dry days. There were some exceptions to the dryness, as heavy rains fell over
the east and southeast part of the area in October and November. The Thanksgiving weekend was
a longer duration period of clouds, with cold temperatures, and occasional rain.
This was similar to what happened during Thanksgiving of 1982.
December brought more sunshine and mostly dry conditions, along with several
windy days in wake of fast moving Pacific cold fronts.
In 2007 the warmest days at Austin and San Antonio came
August 12th to the 15th. The warmest day at Austin Mabry was 100
August 12th, 13th and 14th, and at Austin Bergstrom 99 on
August 12th and 13th. At San Antonio the warmest day was 98 on August 13th. The warmest day at Del Rio
was July 13th,
when the high was 98.
The coldest lows for the year at Austin
and San Antonio came February 16th, when the low was 20 at
Austin Bergstrom, 24 at Austin Mabry, and 24 at San Antonio.
The coldest low at Del Rio was 26 on December 16th.
2007 rainfall was the
4th wettest year at San Antonio, with 47.25 inches of rain;
the 5th wettest year at Del Rio, with 30.82 inches;
the 7th wettest at Austin Bergstrom, with 45.91 inches;
and the 12th wettest at Austin Mabry, with 46.95 inches of
rain.
