October 2006 Weather in Review
|
October 2006 brought more extremes between warm and cold, with
6 cold fronts. Welcome rains came to South Central Texas
in October 2006.
The fast pace of the rain makers coming from west
to east brought rainfall events, that came quickly and moved out
of the area.
More widespread and heavier rains developed on 2 of the 6 cold fronts that
came across South Central Texas in October 2006, notably the
night of the 9th to morning of the 10th,
and the evening of the 18th to early morning of the 19th.
Among the other cold fronts, spotty and brief rains formed
on or ahead of 2 of them, the late afternoon to evening of the 13th and
the 26th. Little or
no rain came with the October 6th and October 21st cold fronts.
The rain event the night of the
15th to early morning of the 16th came with a fast
moving weather system aloft, that was followed by dry
and warm conditions the afternoon of the 16th and during
the day of the 17th. Next to October 1st to 6th, October 17th
was one of the warmer days of the month.
With the October 18th/19th weather event, thunderstorms
in the late afternoon and evening of the 18th
caused very strong winds over parts of Burnet and Llano Counties.
Wind damage was reported in the Kingsland Area in Llano County
and also in the Burnet Area in Burnet County. Winds in the
Kingsland Area were estimated to be between 70 and 80 mph.
A wind gust of 62 mph was measured at the Burnet Airport
between 600 and 630 PM CDT.
Another rain event came October 25th, as a fast
moving weather disturbance came from the west and picked up
Gulf moisture and additional mid to high level moisture
from the Eastern Pacific. Ahead of the cold front in the
late afternoon and evening of the 26th,
spotty showers formed near the dry line in the late afternoon
and moved quickly east. A few
thunderstorms formed over the east part of the area in
the early evening, with the strongest storms over Lavaca and
Dewitt Counties. In the end, October 2006 rainfall was
above average over
the north, east, and southeast part of the area.
See October 2006 Rain Map
Over the west and southwest part of the area rainfall was
below average.
Like most of 2006 the average temperature for the month was above
normal at most places. Extremes in temperature increased for the
month. Although this is usual for October, it did not match some of the
extremes observed in the past. The warmest days saw highs in
the 90s, and the coolest lows came in the 40s, with a few mid to
upper 30s over the Hill Country the 28th and 29th. In October 1993
extremes varied from days with highs in the 90s to lows in the
20s to low 30s at the end of the month.
