November 2006 Weather in Review
|
Warm and dry, briefly interrupted by fast moving, strong cold fronts
that brought a few windy days and brief periods of colder weather,
described November 2006. The month began and ended in a similar way, cooler on
the 1st after a warm Halloween and windy and much colder on the 30th, after an unseasonably
warm day the 29th. Four strong cold fronts passed through the area, and each
new cold front brought colder conditions. November 2006, like November 2005,
was dry, yet a little more rain came this year.
The pattern of windy days after cold fronts
that began in October, increased in November.
The month began breezy and cool on the 1st with afternoon highs 10 to 20 degrees
cooler the day before. The cooler weather continued through the 4th.
A warming trend came by
the 5th. Near record and a few record highs followed
on the afternoons of the 8th to the 10th, when highs
returned to the mid 80s to lower 90s.
A November and November 10th high of 91 was tied at
Austin Mabry Friday the 10th. In addition, on the 10th,
a record daily high of 91 was observed at Del Rio.
Strong winds with cold fronts returned in the middle of November.
The first came on the night of the 10th and day of the 11th, with a much cooler
day Saturday the 11th. Clouds increased
in the day of the 12th and 13th, ahead of another fast moving
weather system, that brought
little or no rain. After warming up the 14th, cooler and windy conditions
came Wednesday the 15th, in wake of a strong cold front and low pressure
system passing just northeast of the area.
On the 15th winds gusted to between 35 and 55 mph.
Some of the highest wind gusts observed at airport locations
for the month came the 15th, except at Del Rio, where the
strongest winds of the month came on the 30th, when winds gusted to 54 mph. The November
15th peak winds were as follows:
San Marcos Airport 52 mph;
New Braunfels Municipal Airport 51 mph; Kerrville 50 mph;
Fredericksburg 48 mph; Georgetown 47 mph; San Antonio 46 mph; and
Burnet 44 mph. Wind gusts in the Austin Area was measured at
44 to 53 mph. At Austin Mabry and Austin Bergstrom wind gusts of
44 mph was observed. At several other locations in the Austin Area,
wind gusts of 49 to 53 mph was measured on November 15th.
The strong winds November 15th, 2006 was the result of a
fast moving cold front, while 5 years earlier on November 15, 2001,
strong winds were associated with severe thunderstorms and also flooding from
Austin to San Antonio .
After the November 15th cold front, a 10 day period of mostly clear days
came November 15 to 24.
The first freeze of the fall came to parts of the hill country
the 16th and 17th. Another freeze came to the hill country and
extended to parts of Central Texas the 21st. The strong cold front on
November 30th left a widespread freeze in the early morning of December
1st.
A warming trend began on the 22nd.
Thanksgiving Day on the 23rd was sunny with highs in the 70s.
More clouds returned the weekend of the 25th and 26th.
Unseasonably warm, spring like days the 27th to the 29th ended quickly the 30th.
A strong cold front on the 30th brought windy and much colder conditions to the
area and left a widespread freeze in the early morning of December 1st. The calendar day high for the 30th, in the low 70s at most places,
came in the predawn hours. Highs in the afternoon
of the 30th were only in the 40s. Winds gusted to 54 mph at
Del Rio, and wind gusts were between 35 and 50 mph was observed at other
locations.
